Behind the #PBCHOOPS Power 5 1/19/21 and January 18 - 23 Week Preview

If last week was a test, Martin County passed it with an A+, 100%. The Tigers defeated two #PBCHOOPS Power 5 teams in impressive fashion, leaving little doubt they are the #1 team in the area but it is not reflected in the MaxPreps composite rankings which make up the #PBCHOOPS Power 5. The human poll does see Martin County move up to #1 in the Public School rankings but in a tie with undefeated Wellington. The Private School rankings have Grandview Prep move up two spots and Saint Andrew's stay in the top spot despite a loss to Pine Crest. The schedule as with every week is constantly changing with big matchups being cancelled due to various safety protocols, this weeks highly anticipated contest between Wellington and Forest Hill has been cancelled along with a few others, taking a little bit of shine of the weeks games. Here's a look at all three polls (Power, Public and Private) and a preview of this week's best remaining games:

#1 Saint Andrew's (8-4)

Saint Andrew's suffered it's fourth loss of the season to Pine Crest last week, yet still remain at the top of the POWER 5 based on it's strength of schedule. The combined record of the teams lost to is 55-2 and all four teams ranked in the Top 20 in the state, two in the Top 10.

#2 Martin County (16-0)

Martin County picked up a HUGE win Saturday against Forest Hill, the Tigers win was even more impressive without Player of the Year front runner Ryan Davis, who had to sit out due to injury. Martin County is well coached, talented and deep. They look state title ready.

#3 Grandview Prep (10-2)

Grandview Prep stays solid in the #3 after a win over Newman Thursday night. Next up is a Benjamin team that is playing extremely well as of late.

#4 Jupiter Christian (7-3)

Jupiter Christian dropped both Top 5 matchups last week but still holds a slim lead over #5 Forest Hill based primarily on it's double OT win over Grandview early in the season which bolstered its strength of schedule.

#5 Forest Hill (8-1)

Forest Hill showed plenty of heart Saturday coming back from a 29 point halftime deficit to Martin County cut the lead to 1 with 18 seconds remaining in the game. The Falcons however couldn't close it out, eventually losing to the Tigers. The key moving forward for Forest Hill will be how to bring that same level of intensity it showed in the 2nd half against Martin County to every game. They will have plenty of time to work on it this week as both of their scheduled games have been cancelled.

BOYS WEEK PREVIEW 1/18/21 - 1/23/21

Tuesday January 19, 2021

Atlantic Christian vs Spanish River

This is a very intriguing game, Spanish River is undefeated at 6-0 and flying way under the radar going up against a young, yet talented Atlantic Christian squad who has started the season 1-3. The battle of the Sharks should give us a better idea of each teams post season future.

#1 Saint Andrew's vs North Broward Prep

North Broward Prep has gained its stride after a slow start to the season and now sits at a record of 8-5. They welcome a Saint Andrew's team that has faced the states best. This is always a competitive rivalry, Tuesday shouldn't be any different.

#4 Jupiter Christian vs Highlands Christian

After a promising start to the season Jupiter Christian has hit a tough patch. The Eagles didn't play a game for close to a month before coming back last week, losing to both Martin County and King's Academy. The road doesn't get any easier as they face a Highlands Christian team that handed them their first defeat of the season in December. The Eagles look to avoid a third straight loss.

Thursday January 21, 2021

#3 King's Academy vs Cardinal Newman

This rivalry has been dominated by Newman in recent years but things are beginning to change for King's. The Lions are 11-2 and ranked #3 in the #PBCHOOPS Private School poll after a win over district rival Jupiter Christian. Newman has been competitive all season and played a tough schedule, expect a close game.

#1 Martin County vs #4 Dwyer

Martin County has already knocked off two Palm Beach County powerhouses, Saint Andrew's and Forest Hill. Now look for the hat-trick as the take on yet another of the counties top teams, Dwyer.
