Behind the #PBCHOOPSTOP5 12/6/20 and Week 3 Preview

After a great week of competitive Private School basketball only one undefeated team remains. Saint Andrew's, Grandview Prep and Jupiter Christian all suffered their first losses of the season. While last weeks #3 team, Cardinal Newman, had a rough opening and dropped out of the poll. They have been replaced by Saint John Paul II at #5. Here's a look Behind This Weeks #PBCHOOPS Top 5:

#1 Saint Andrew's

Saint Andrew's had the monumental task of going up to play the #1 team in the country Saturday in Montverde Academy. The Scots competed but weren't a match for the Eagles. A tough loss but surely a building moment for the team that will pay dividends down the line. It will take a lot to move Saint Andrew's out of the #1 spot, this won't be enough.

#2 King's Academy

The Lions are the only undefeated team in the Top 5. While they haven't faced near the level of competition of Saint Andrew's or Grandview Prep to start the season, their preseason 14 point victory over Highlands Christian looks really good now after the Knights handed Jupiter Christian it's first loss of the season. King's beat the man that beat the man that beat the man, if that makes sense to get the #2 spot.

#3 Jupiter Christian

What a week for the Jupiter Christian. Friday night was a game to remember and get's the early season vote as game of the season thus far. The Eagles took down then #2 Grandview Prep in a double OT thriller in Pompano Beach. RJ Morris was all world going for 37 points and willing his squad to a big time victory. The squad just didn't have enough gas the next night in the championship game, falling to host Highlands Christian 65 - 48. The Eagles did prove they are for real and can compete even while being down a man.

#4 Grandview Prep

The Pride had an eventful week to start the season, Monday winning an overtime thriller against North Broward Prep in it's season opener and Friday losing in double OT to Jupiter Christian. The loss to Jupiter Christian may have stung a bit but the Pride were able to bounce back nicely the next night with a victory over an underrated and talented Elite Academy squad. One thing is for sure the Pride are tough. 2022 PG Gunner Walters is a name to know, Gunner came up huge in the double OT match-up with Jupiter Christian going for 32 points. Due to the lack of depth Grandview will be in many close games but have proven thus far they can come through.

#5 Saint John Paul II

Saint John Paul came into the Highlands Holiday Classic looking for respect. After a 1st round loss to Jupiter Christian, the Eagles won their next two games including a 50-36 victory over then #3 Cardinal Newman. The Eagles have a budding prospect in sophmore Kyle Edison, who finished with a game high 28 points in the win over Newman. Edison a high motor guy that play downhill and a key that now has Saint John Paul at 3-2 on the season.

Elite Academy vs #2 King's Academy

The Lions get their first test of the regular season when Elite Academy comes to West Palm Beach, a team that has proven they can compete. They are led by 6' junior PG Tyvon Thomas, a big time scorer who lights it up from 3 point land. This should be a very good match-up.

Cardinal Newman vs #3 Jupiter Christian

Newman had a rough start to the season dropping two games in the Highlands Holiday Classic, they will get a couple shots at redemption getting a rematch with Saint John Paul II Thursday and #3 Jupiter Christian Friday. While things didn't look good expect the Crusaders to be better each time out. This will be a big game for Jupiter Christian as well against a district rival.

Martin County vs #1 Saint Andrew's

Saint Andrew's continues to welcome all contenders, this time a very talented Martin County team heads to Boca. The Tigers are undefeated and led by 6' 4" junior Ryan Davis and 6' 7" senior Nathan Mikkelson. Expect a good game.
