Behind the #PBCHOOPSTOP5 11/27/16 and Week 2 preview

After a great 1st week of the regular season, which featured some very competitive match-ups, district games take center stage. Outside of Dwyer, all the Top 5 teams were in action last week and were tested, highlighted by a few teams that surprised. This week we should see several intriguing district games and find out if those sleeper teams are for real.

#1 Dwyer - The Panthers don't start their regular season until Friday. But start it off with a bang as they face district rival Royal Palm Beach followed by one of Broward's elite programs, McArthur on Saturday in the annual Kreul Showcase at Monarch High School.

#2 Cardinal Newman - The Crusaders headed up to Orlando as they opened their 2016-17 regular season at the Breast Cancer Awareness Classic. This event featured not only some of the best teams in Florida but some of the best individual talent the state has to offer. Newman went 2-0 defeating two very highly regarded teams in 8A St Petersburg and 5A Orlando-Jones.

#3 Wellington - The Wolverines headed into the Charger Classic the #2 team in the #PBCHOOPS Top 5, they fell 1 spot after a 1-1 weekend which included a loss to defending 8A champion Blanche Ely and it's staunch defense.

#4 St Andrew's - The Scots kicked off the season 3-0 and senior Anthony Polite picked up right where he left off last season, dominating opponents and carrying St Andrew's to victories. The weekend was highlighted by his 29 point, 27 rebound (school record) performance against Naples - Golden Gate

#5 Oxbridge - The Thunderwolves won their opener against a feisty Fort Pierce Central team, coming back from a 8 point deficit in the 4th quarter to seal the deal.

Week 2 Preview

Tuesday November 29th

Boca Raton vs Lake Worth - This is a battle between two of the top teams in 10-9A. The Bobcats fell last week to Boynton and now face a Trojan squad that plays arguably the best team defense in the county. The game will also feature play makers on both sides as Cade Long and Max Demeus face off against Marques Spann, Bryan Henry and Josh Rathell.

Santaluces vs Park Vista - Don't look know, but Santaluces may be back again. Many expected a down year for the Chiefs after the loss of many seniors but so far so good. Santaluces has posted a couple of strong victories and now face cross town rival Park Vista. The Cobras are the mystery of a wide open 10-9A district, no one is sure what to expect. Questions should be answered in this game which is sure to be a close, tightly contested game.

Wednesday November 30th

Lake Worth vs Boynton Beach - All summer and fall long the word out of Boynton was not to sleep on the Tigers. After a surprise victory over Boca last week our antennas went up. Now they face a Lake Worth team filled with hungry defenders and players to match. Lake Worth will either be riding high after a victory or looking to regroup, while Boynton will be coming off what could be a tough game against a scrappy Forest Hill team. Either way this has #PBCHOOPS Game of the Night possibilities if both teams take care of business.

Friday December 2nd

#1 Dwyer vs Royal Palm Beach - Royal Palm will look to right the ship after a tough loss to Orlando Olympia in the Charger Classic. The Wildcats seemed to be on their way after notching two strong victories over Palm Beach Lakes and Boyd Anderson. Now they face #1 Dwyer who should be ready to go as they kick off their season and district play at Royal Palm.

Atlantic vs Boca Raton - Atlantic is a team with promise, they went toe to toe with #3 Wellington in the preseason and have all the pieces to make a run this year. Yet so far they haven't had much success against the Bobcats. In fall preseason action they've lost each time they faced the Bobcats. Look for both teams to get after it as they look for a leg up in the district.

Lake Worth vs Park Vista - Both teams should be ready to compete come Friday after each being tested earlier in the week. Regardless of the outcomes of their early week games, this will be a competitive match-up.

Saturday December 2nd

#1 Dwyer vs McArthur (Kreul Showcase) - High profile game as Palm Beach County's premiere programs takes on one of Broward's best in a nationally recognized showcase event.

#4 St Andrew's vs Ft Lauderdale (Kreul Showcase) - This game pits FSU Signee Anthony Polite vs Towson signee Jeff Prophete at an event that will feature some of the best talent in South Florida.

#2 Cardinal Newman vs Suncoast - The Chargers went 2-0 at their event and were led by the young guns. Now they face rival #2 Cardinal Newman who have a freshman of their own to go along with senior PG KJ Fitzgerald. This should be a another very good game.

Week 2 has the makings to be a great one. All 5 teams in the #PBCHOOPS Top 5 are in action, while a handful of others looking to break into the poll are looking to make statements. Should be fun.
